Plot Summary: Even after death, life is full of paperwork and criminals. Tsuzuki Asato is a 26 year old, happy-go-lucky, and dorky shinigami (god of death) whose job is to makes sure that those who are dead remain dead and stay in their proper realms. Even though he has had this job for over 70 years, he is in the worst division with horrible pay. He also has a knack for not keeping partners (since shinigami work in pairs), but now he seems to have one that will stick around; stubborn, smart-mouthed, serious and defensive 16 year old, Kurosaki Hisoka. With each case they investigate, they come closer to the conspiracies of the serial killer Dr. Muraki Kazutaka. Tsuzuki's relationship with Hisoka is growing stronger and closer...but there is a dark past to how Tsuzuki died that will not give him peace.

Tsuzuki Asato (age 26) was born February 24th in the year 1900.  His blood type is B.  He is the main character of Yami no Matsuei, and is the strongest of the shinigami.  He loves sweets and does not seem to be a very serious character at first, but there is a lot more to him than meets the eye. Asato Tsuzuki is the slacker of the department. In the department, Tsuzuki would be called the worse Guardian of Death. But that might not be the case since some wacko person is after him (Muraki). But despite the idiot, side there is part of him that is serous.

At first, his past is unknown, but as time goes, it comes out.

Kurosaki Hisoka (age 16) was born October 18th in the year 1980.  His blood type is AB.  He is another shinigami who is a main character; he is Tsuzuki's partner, and is Tsuzuki's opposite in personality: angry, withdrawn, and usually completely serious, no matter what the situation.

Hisoka, Tsuzuki's partner, is a youth with a bad past. His childhood was spent in a cellar, hence his depression in the series. Hisoka and Tsuzuki care much for each other and do not take their partnership/friendship for granted. Entering the Ministry of Hades with his wits, he did not expect to be partnered up with the sugar toothed Tsuzuki.

Hisoka may be younger than Tsuzuki but he is the wiser on of the two when it comes to things outside of the ministry. Hisoka has an uncanny resemblance to Hijiri Manasei, the high schooler with the cursed eye. Also, Hisoka absorbs people’s emotions. In one of the first 5 episodes, he feels ill when Tsuzuki was near him, 'cause Tasuzuki was not feeling to peachy

Watari Yutaka (age 24) was born April 15th in the year 1953.  His blood type is O; he is yet another shinigami, although he watches over a part of Japan different from Tsuzuki and Hisoka.  Watari is the scientist of Yami no Matsuei, who analyzes data and aids Tsuzuki and Hisoka by searching for information.

Tatsumi Seiichirou (age 29) was born December 27th.  He is the secretary at Juuouchou, and is another shinigami; he can use shadows and darkness for transport and as a source of power.  He loves money and can be rather dangerous where its loss is involved, but is also extremely protective of his friends and co-workers.

Muraki Kazutaka was born December 4th, 1964 (this makes him to be in his thirties or so during Yami no Matsuei), and his blood type is A.  He is a doctor working at a clinic in Tokyo .  He is obsessed by perfection and seeks to surpass the limitations of the human body and the human life span.

he looks young for his age. He is the last of a long line of doctors, and is highly respected by many, except by those who know, and have seen the real Muraki. The true nature of Kazutaka Muraki is quite horrifying; he is a brutal murderer, having killed Tsuzuki's partner, Hisoka Kurosaki among others, and tends to think of human life as something that can simply be thrown away. Despite showing no sympathy for anyone or anything, he uninhibitedly lusts after the main protagonist of the series, Asato Tsuzuki. He is determined to win Tsuzuki over, and will go to all lengths to ensure that, including kidnapping and murdering, all just to force Tsuzuki to unwillingly go on a date with him. To add to the other acts of extremeness he has committed, he, in the long run, is searching desperately for a way to cure death, and ensure immortality, going so far as to even use magic and sorcery. He also keeps the decapitated head of his half-brother, Saki, in a jar, which he hopes to one day bring Saki back to life, only so he can kill him.

Kazutaka Muraki's sexuality is partially unclear; he has a lustful interest in another man, but he also has a female fiancée whom is the only person he thinks about and in his mind apologizes from when he is dying in the flames Tsuzuki summoned up. Seemingly the cause of most cases Tsuzuki and Hisoka are put up against, he is quite a memorable villain.

Status

Doctor, sorcerer, murderer

Chief Konoe was born June 12th and his blood type is O.  He gives the shinigami orders.  He loves sweets, like Tsuzuki, and asks Tsuzuki for souvenirs whenever he and Hisoka go on a mission somewhere.

The Gushoshin are kind of like little helpers. ^^; They are twins who help organize things, and one is sent on missions with those shinigami who do not have partners available (i.e. Tsuzuki in episode one), and they have high-pitched voices. ^^;

Minase Hijiri is a student at a private school, who recently received an eye transplant from the violinist Otonashi Tatsuya.  He is involved in Yami no Matsuei's "Devil's Trill" arc.

Princess Tsubaki is the daughter of the wealthy owner of the Queen Camellia, Kakyouin.  She has a heart condition, and her father hired a doctor who could care for her and administer medicine to her.  She is involved in Yami no Matsuei's "King of Swords" arc.

Oriya is a childhood friend of Muraki's who owns a secret brothel in Kyoto .  He appears in the final arc of the anime.

Maria Wong- t seems young Maria committed suicide when she learned her stepmother was using her to get rich. "Mommy Dearest" had her resurrected as a zombie, who needs blood to survive. I
